Connected to Svitiaz by canals; fed by precipitation, groundwater and exchange with the other lakes.
The name is linked to the tench, though this is a local tradition rather than an established etymology.
The bottom sediments are organic-ferruginous sapropels: the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine puts the reserve at 492,000 m³ and the mean thickness at 6.6 m.
The official profile and the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine attest bream, pike and crucian carp; the lake-specific description adds tench, roach and weatherfish.
Official sources do not resolve “crucian carp” to a species, so the reference to the native crucian carp carries moderate confidence.
The widely quoted maximum depth of 3.7 m conflicts with the regional water authority (1.26 m) and the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine (1.5 m); this profile uses the more precise official record.
