What to know

Lake in detail

• The oldest lake in the group at about 9,800 years; according to O. F. Yakushko, the peat beneath its sapropel dates to 10,060 ± 120 years.
• A relict dystrophic lake: it silts up and overgrows continuously, turning into a bog.
• The water is distinctly brown from humic acids, with a transparency of only 0.5–0.7 m.
• Two kilometres north of Pisochne and a few hundred metres from the border with Belarus.
• The official profile names nine fish species directly; the dwarf catfish is matched to the invasive brown bullhead Ameiurus nebulosus.
• A retrospective scientific review reports 14 species for Moshne without giving the full lake list, so only the nine attested by name have profiles here.
• In the strictly protected zone all recreational and economic activity is prohibited, except research.
• Shallow and overgrown — winter ice cover can bring suffocating fish kills; the lake's sapropel is acidic (pH 5.43), which is rare for the group.
