Key facts

Piiavochne is a tiny mesotrophic lake-and-marsh complex of Shatsk National Nature Park, about 1 ha in area. Older works described it as having lost its open-lake state through shoaling and overgrowth, yet the park's survey of 27 August 2024 found the marsh in satisfactory condition with rare flora on a positive trend.

What to know

Lake in detail

  • The scientific morphometric table gives an area of about 0.01 km², a shoreline of 0.20 km and a water basin of roughly 100 × 100 m.
  • The maximum depth of 2 m comes from Lencewicz's historical table of 1931; the more recent review no longer states a depth, so the figure should not be read as a current sounding.
  • The water authority places Piiavochne north of Navrattia and assigns it to the Turskyi canal basin; its table gives a mean depth of 0.5 m and a volume of 5,000 m³.
  • The official table is self-contradictory: for a water body of roughly 100 × 100 m it gives a shoreline of 2 km and a maximum depth of 1 m, against 0.2 km and a historical 2 m in the scientific sources; the doubtful values have not been carried over.
  • On 27 August 2024 park researchers noted a strong presence of cranberry, marsh helleborine, early marsh-orchid, white beak-sedge and sphagnum mosses.
  • Marsh helleborine and early marsh-orchid are vulnerable species in the Red Book of Ukraine.
  • The verdict depends on what is being judged: as an open lake the water body has degraded badly, but as a marsh complex it was in satisfactory condition in 2024, with its flora on a positive trend.
  • No verified fish list or modern control catch for Piiavochne was found in open sources.

History

Chronology

  1. 1931

The historical morphometric table records an area of about 0.01 km² for Piiavochne, dimensions of 0.12 × 0.08 km and a maximum depth of 2 m.

  2. 2017

A scientific review classed Piiavochne among the dystrophic water bodies that have lost their open natural state through siltation, shoaling and overgrowth.

  3. 27 серпня 2024

The park's research department surveyed the flora of the mesotrophic lake-and-marsh complex and recorded the site in satisfactory condition, with its marsh flora on a positive trend.

Ecological pressures

Loss of the open lake surface

Siltation, shoaling and marsh succession are shrinking the lake phase of the water body, though the marsh complex that has formed supports rare orchid and sphagnum communities.

an area of about 1 ha; the current depth and open-water volume are unpublished
