Three men carrying spades were crossing Tatarska Hill when they suddenly saw an unusual glow ahead, like a fire. One of the travellers dared to approach it. The other two saw his figure beside the light, took fright and fled.
The tale warns that if only one man had reached the spot, he might have remained there forever. Enchanted money, according to folk belief, lured solitary treasure seekers and made them disappear without a trace.
When all three men ran, the glow faded and the treasure hid itself in the ground once more. They later returned and began turning over the sand with their spades where they had seen the light. Instead of great riches, they found only six roubles.
The desired treasure is therefore almost unattainable in the tale: it reveals itself, frightens the seekers and finally leaves them with only a tiny part of the wealth it appeared to promise.
